We are happy to be contacted by phone, mail, web or in person at our workshop in Holme on the Cumbria/Lancashire border. Please leave a message should you get the answer machine and we will call you back. Emails will be responded to within 2 working days. We will ask for a brief idea of what you are planning, your expectations with regard to timing, contact details and, for fitted furniture, make an appointment to come and meet you at site.

Meeting client

We love to meet our clients in person, whether you come to the office or (in the case of fitted furniture) we come to you, it is a great opportunity to gain insight into the space the intended piece will sit, the people who will use it, their taste, lifestyle, any idiosyncrasies, and it’s intended usage. It is a time to share collated images (so please bring these along if you have them), ideas that interest you, and to discuss options and possibilities.

Design detail

Following the client meeting we will do preliminary design sketches and a corresponding costing. Should this be agreed in principal we will request a deposit, work on detailed designs, and, together with you, select any required materials (eg. timber, finishes, hardware). Plans can be modified at this stage but once they, and the costing, are finalised we work to this so there are no surprise extra’s on completion.

Most of our timber is grown and harvested in Cumbria from sustainable forests and we personally select the timber for each project either from our own store or from our supplier.  Clients are welcome to accompany us on selection should they wish to. Construction of the furniture will then begin in our workshop. For fitted structures like wardrobes, the basic components (eg wooden drawer units) are made in the workshop and the structure is assembled at site. This ensures a precise fit otherwise impossible in the older local properties of Cumbria and Lancashire. Clients are welcome to come and see their piece taking shape, we can also send photo’s at interesting stages so you feel a part of the creative process.

Delivery / Fitting

Once construction is complete, delivery and/or fitting will be carried out by us. This can take up to two days for fitted structures depending on the size of the project.

We provide information on how to look after your furniture and keep it in great condition. We are sure you will be very happy with your acquisition however, as with all solid wooden products, there may occasionally be some minor movement in the wood as it settles into your home and its new ambient environment. Please contact us if you have any concerns, we are happy to advise or come to make minor adjustments should this be necessary. We also offer a polishing service for our products to clients living within a 30 mile radius of the workshop – please call or email us for details.

Truely Bespoke Furniture

HOUT have been designing and making bespoke fitted and freestanding furniture for private and commercial clients for the past 12 years. With a love of English hardwoods and linear lines, a focus on enduring beauty and purity in function, and a dedication to impeccable craftsmanship, we design and make simple, fresh, individual pieces of minimal, aesthetic distinction.

Sustainability is at our core, we work predominantly with locally grown and sourced Cumbrian timbers; Sycamore, Ash, Elm, Oak, Yew, Cherry, and Beech and occasionally imported American Walnut.  Most of our furniture is finished with a natural oil which enhances the grain enabling expression of the woods simple, sensual, beauty and our painted surfaces are finished by hand in environmentally-friendly, high quality paints.

Each piece of furniture is designed and made specifically for our client with costing dependent on the specifics of the piece. However, it is part of our ethos to provide beautiful furniture at affordable prices and we urge you to call us if you have a project in mind – we are happy to provide a quick estimate of cost over the phone so that you can see if it matches your budget before taking the project further.

We design and build for longevity, our furniture is made to be used, to look and feel good, to function perfectly and to share the space it inhabits in harmony and ease with generations of users and whether living, working, resting or playing HOUT believe its furniture should be an everyday part of the users lives.

What people say about us

Hout Design built me a bespoke wardrobe and did a fantastic job. It was challenging as the house is old so none of the walls are straight but Hout's craftsmanship and skill made it look like it's always been there. Worked on time and to budget and would definitely recommend.

Whilst looking for a bespoke furniture maker we reached out to Hout design’s Sjouke. As per our design Sjouke hand crafted a lovely pair of bedside tables. He helped advise us which wood and finish would be suitable for our desired look and the communication was great throughout the process. Overall the craftsmanship and quality is fantastic and I would highly recommend Hout design.

Sjouke 'got' our ideas for built-in bookshelves at once. He came up with lots of additional ideas and alternatives, was extremely professional and sympathetic to our needs. We now have a stunning two-sided bookcase, which is functional but with added style. Although Hout Design did all the hard work Don and I feel like the end result was a team effort by all of us. Would not hesitate to recommend.

Had a few things made: Alcove wardrobes, Freestanding wardrobe and Large bookcase. I am extremely happy with the items that were made for us by Sjouke. I felt that we were able to discuss what design we wanted, and Sjouke would then add suggestions that his extensive knowledge has given him. He then drew the designs for approval, and the result remained true to the design. The bookcase and wardrobe were rather tricky cases, I wanted them to be veeeerrrryyyy big but had to fit up my winding and narrow Victorian staircase - I am happy to say that these were able to be done!

We commissioned Hout Design to make us 2 bed side cupboards. After a discussion sycamore wood was chosen, the design is contemporary with beautiful tapering legs and inset drawers, the craftsmanship is amazing and the finished furniture is not only solid and well-made but it is individual and a joy to look at.. We have already decided to consult Hout Design for the refurbishment of our kitchen in the future as we feel we can talk to them about our plans and we have confidence in their skills.
