Elm Compact Kitchen.

We are passionate about the challenge of not being limited by small spaces – this kitchen is designed so that the traditional Belfast sink could be used without disturbing the strong linear lines. Elm has a lovely grain and each of the horizontal lines comes from one whole plank of timber from the same tree. The Long, deep, full-extension drawers maximize storage space whilst creating a simple uncluttered feel. This is further emphasised by handmade Elm shelving which provides a display platform for much loved heirlooms. The white composite worktop reflects light, creating a freshness by day that, with discrete undershelf lighting, becomes warmth by evening. A curved window seat offers ‘chill-out’ space for a coffee or a chef’s sneaky glass of wine.

Handmade Hardwood Kitchens That Don’t Cost The Earth

Commissioning a Kitchen is a considered decision and suggests a desire for individuality and involvement. Some clients come to us with a well formed idea of what they would like, whereas others prefer us to conceptualise it for them. Either way a closely consultative relationship between HOUT and the client engenders a free flow of ideas. Guided by our knowledge and experience and enhanced by our genuine creative freedom, this collaboration culminates in a very personal, uniquely functional, and truly bespoke hardwood kitchen.

Our kitchens are built by hand, using responsibly sourced solid English hardwoods and the most advanced hinge and roller mechanisms, to last (literally) a lifetime. They are designed to have timeless appeal and, because they are made from solid wood, are easy to maintain in beautiful condition.

We are able to provide all necessary work for your kitchen project from concept through to installation. Included in the cost of your beautiful hardwood kitchen are: technical drawings and plans, dismantling and removal of existing kitchen (if necessary), small adjustments and redirection of services (electricity and plumbing) along with any plastering/decorating required for this, minor building work, small joinery jobs (aside from kitchen) required to facilitate complete installment (eg skirtings, window sills etc), cupboard/shelving lighting and fitting the kitchen. We are also proficient in executing more complex alterations (eg plumbing, electricity, plastering, building) where required for installment of your HOUT kitchen.

HOUT kitchens are extremely client specific and so the price varies considerably but as a guide they range from £10000 to £50000.

Start Your New Kitchen Journey Here

We are happy to be contacted by phone, mail, web and in person at our workshop. Please leave a message should you get the answer machine and we will call you back. Emails will be responded to within 2 working days. We ask for a brief idea of what you are planning, your expectations with regard to timing, contact details and make an appointment to come and meet you at site. We are also happy to provide you with an initial idea of cost over the phone so that you can see if it fits within your budget.

Meeting client

A great opportunity for us to better understand the space for your new kitchen: the people who will inhabit it, their style, lifestyle, any idiosyncrasies, and how they intend to use it. This is a time to discuss options and possibilities, design ideas, technical specifications, material choices, finish preferences and to look through collated images and ideas that inspire and interest you. We use top quality technical and eco-friendly products which we have come to trust over years of use, and are able to show or supply samples to help you make the right choices. A variety of worktops are also possible including; wood, concrete (which we make in-house), granite, slate, marble and (via our suppliers) Silestone and Corian.

Design detail

Following the client meeting we will provide simple design sketches, an estimate of cost and a potential time slot. Should these be agreed in principal we will request a deposit, work on detailed designs and select materials and finishing products (timber, paint shade, handles, worktop and knobs etc). Plans will often be modified at this stage as clients are exposed to in-depth plans and design features but once these and the costing are finalised we work to them so there are no surprise extras. Further payments will be requested in installments once construction begins, with the final amount payable on completion.

Create

Most of our timber is grown, harvested and dried for us here in Cumbria from sustainable forests and so we are able to personally select the timber for each project. Often, all the timber for a Kitchen comes from one traceable tree. Clients are welcome to accompany us during the timber selection process should they wish to. Construction of the Kitchen will then begin in the workshop. Clients are welcome to come and see their kitchen taking shape and we can send photos at critical and interesting stages.

Fitting

Once construction is complete, delivery and fitting of the kitchen will be carried out by us. It will often include plumbing-in the sink, tap, dishwasher, washing machine, and electricity for any shelf lighting etc.  This usually takes about a week.

Service

We provide information on how to look after your new hardwood kitchen and how to keep it in great condition. We are sure you will be very happy with your new acquisition. However, as with all solid wooden products, there may occasionally be some minor movement in the wood as it settles into your home and its new ambient environment. Should this occur it will always be minor, nevertheless please contact us should you have any concerns, we are happy to advise or to come and make minor adjustments where necessary.
