HOUT love designing and creating kitchens; we feel they are central to your home’s personality, and an expression of those who use them.

Each unique kitchen, hand-crafted by us using beautiful English timbers (oak, ash, elm and other hardwoods) and the best technological hardware, reflects a close and considered collaboration with the client – a narration of their style, lifestyle, family ethos and eccentricities.

Handmade Hardwood Kitchens That Don’t Cost The Earth

Commissioning a Kitchen is a considered decision and suggests a desire for individuality and involvement. Some clients come to us with a well formed idea of what they would like, whereas others prefer us to conceptualise it for them. Either way a closely consultative relationship between HOUT and the client engenders a free flow of ideas. Guided by our knowledge and experience and enhanced by our genuine creative freedom, this collaboration culminates in a very personal, uniquely functional, and truly bespoke hardwood kitchen.

Our kitchens are built by hand, using responsibly sourced solid English hardwoods and the most advanced hinge and roller mechanisms, to last (literally) a lifetime. They are designed to have timeless appeal and, because they are made from solid wood, are easy to maintain in beautiful condition.

We are able to provide all necessary work for your kitchen project from concept through to installation. Included in the cost of your beautiful hardwood kitchen are: technical drawings and plans, dismantling and removal of existing kitchen (if necessary), small adjustments and redirection of services (electricity and plumbing) along with any plastering/decorating required for this, minor building work, small joinery jobs (aside from kitchen) required to facilitate complete installment (eg skirtings, window sills etc), cupboard/shelving lighting and fitting the kitchen. We are also proficient in executing more complex alterations (eg plumbing, electricity, plastering, building) where required for installment of your HOUT kitchen.

HOUT kitchens are extremely client specific and so the price varies considerably but as a guide they range from £10000 to £50000.

Start Your New Kitchen Journey Here

We are happy to be contacted by phone, mail, web and in person at our workshop. Please leave a message should you get the answer machine and we will call you back. Emails will be responded to within 2 working days. We ask for a brief idea of what you are planning, your expectations with regard to timing, contact details and make an appointment to come and meet you at site. We are also happy to provide you with an initial idea of cost over the phone so that you can see if it fits within your budget.

Meeting client

A great opportunity for us to better understand the space for your new kitchen: the people who will inhabit it, their style, lifestyle, any idiosyncrasies, and how they intend to use it. This is a time to discuss options and possibilities, design ideas, technical specifications, material choices, finish preferences and to look through collated images and ideas that inspire and interest you. We use top quality technical and eco-friendly products which we have come to trust over years of use, and are able to show or supply samples to help you make the right choices. A variety of worktops are also possible including; wood, concrete (which we make in-house), granite, slate, marble and (via our suppliers) Silestone and Corian.

Design detail

Following the client meeting we will provide simple design sketches, an estimate of cost and a potential time slot. Should these be agreed in principal we will request a deposit, work on detailed designs and select materials and finishing products (timber, paint shade, handles, worktop and knobs etc). Plans will often be modified at this stage as clients are exposed to in-depth plans and design features but once these and the costing are finalised we work to them so there are no surprise extras. Further payments will be requested in installments once construction begins, with the final amount payable on completion.

Create

Most of our timber is grown, harvested and dried for us here in Cumbria from sustainable forests and so we are able to personally select the timber for each project. Often, all the timber for a Kitchen comes from one traceable tree. Clients are welcome to accompany us during the timber selection process should they wish to. Construction of the Kitchen will then begin in the workshop. Clients are welcome to come and see their kitchen taking shape and we can send photos at critical and interesting stages.

Fitting

Once construction is complete, delivery and fitting of the kitchen will be carried out by us. It will often include plumbing-in the sink, tap, dishwasher, washing machine, and electricity for any shelf lighting etc.  This usually takes about a week.

Service

We provide information on how to look after your new hardwood kitchen and how to keep it in great condition. We are sure you will be very happy with your new acquisition. However, as with all solid wooden products, there may occasionally be some minor movement in the wood as it settles into your home and its new ambient environment. Should this occur it will always be minor, nevertheless please contact us should you have any concerns, we are happy to advise or to come and make minor adjustments where necessary.

What people say about us

Changing a dreary dining room into a light, contemporary, beautiful, peaceful kitchen, dining and working room has been a life changing experience for me. Sjouke was so empathetic and able to listen and imagine with me what we wanted to achieve. I felt totally confident to allow his judgement for design and choice of materials. The 'seascape' result of beautiful ash creating a landscape like appearance matched with the lime grey of the concrete top is very special. The workmanship, professionalism, care for my home whilst the work was ongoing, and tidiness was superb. My friends all want a kitchen like mine, especially the drawers with no handles!

Maria

Hout have a design solution for any home, they design and produce amazingly timeless, practical furniture from beautiful pieces of wood. Sjouke has an exceptional talent and vision and was able to produce a kitchen for our home which fulfilled my wishes, it was practical and extremely beautiful. Nothing is too much trouble for Hout and they are very easy to work with, I highly recommend this company if you want something to last the test of time which has a unique quality.

Jane

I couldn't be more pleased with the handmade kitchen by Hout. Sjouke is a skilled craftsman finishing things off to perfection. He is full of creative ideas finding great solutions to some tricky design challenges, balancing functionality and aesthetics brilliantly. The beautiful curved window seat was an idea of his to accommodate the kitchen draws once opened. The whole process of commissioning Hout to make my kitchen was a real pleasure. Sjouke and Tracy kept me involved from start to finish, consulting me along the way and inviting me to the workshop to see the kitchen in progress. Communication by Tracy was excellent, giving me a clear idea of costs and timing. I valued Hout's commitment to the environment, using sustainable sources of wood and reusing my existing worktop and sink. I was keen to have the kitchen made in elm and was delighted that Sjouke could source it from a local supplier. Sjouke and Ben were both very respectful of me and my home when fitting the kitchen. I would highly recommend Hout to anyone who is after a beautifully crafted contemporary kitchen.

Amy

Hout provided us with a bespoke hand crafted kitchen in Elm. The project was planned in September 2016 and was completed by May 2017 on schedule and to our full satisfaction. Hout is a small company and prides itself in the quality of work delivered rather than haste. The end product is of exceptionally high standard and is extremely good value for money. I would not hesitate in using Hout again or recommending them to my friends and family.

Stewart

After our initial meeting with Sjouke of Hout Design it was clear that he understood our vision. We originally contacted Hout to design an innovative moving wardrobe but as our relationship developed so did the size of our project ending up with a complete kitchen and staircase as well as the wardrobe. Both Sjouke and Tracy were a delight to work with and we are thrilled with the results.
